A History of Kobe Bryants Endorsement Deals

A History of Kobe Bryants Endorsement DealsA History of Kobe Bryants Endorsement DealsWhen L.A. Lakers guard Kobe Bryant welches accused of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman back in 2003, advertising and marketing professionals across the country immediately began speculating about his endorsement deals. What would happen to his biggest backers? Who would run from him, and who would stand by his side? After all, in the USA, you are innocent until proven guilty (even though, as with the case with Jared Fogle, anything like this is just a PR nightmare waiting to explode). When the dust settled, the expected happened. Kobe Bryant settled out of court with his accuser, and of course, those settlement terms were never made public. But what we do know is how his major backers responded, both before and after that settlement. Its also worth noting that Bryant went on to become the NBAs Most Valuable Player in 2008, so the assault charges did not impact his career. McDonalds McDona lds were easily viewed as the biggie and, quite possibly, had the most to lose. The fast-food chain had just launched an ad campaign geared toward moms with new salads that showed favorable results. The salads were a hit and are drawing in the families. Plus, McDs had announced a new tagline of Im Lovin It and was making great strides in bringing customers back. Customers of all ages. Guilty or innocent, the charges alone had plenty of people forming their judgments. That included women, and thats the audience McDs was trying to reach in its new commercials. In 2004, McDonalds cut all ties to Kobe Bryant and never renewed them. The assault allegations were enough to keep a wholesome, family-oriented chain like McDs well away from that kind of scandal. And although the case was settled, the damage had been done, and the mud had stuck. Bryant was damaged goods, and after 3 years with the fast food giant, it was all over. Nike Nike signed Bryant just days before the allegations wer e made public. The company got a ton of free publicity just from the media exposure, although its hardly the kind of free press any company wants. Once the settlement was reached, it was plain sailing for Nike. They had signed Bryant to a $40 mio contract, and they were not about to let the slide. Plus, unlike McDonalds, Nike is a company based around athletic achievement and does not require the same wholesome family image. Since 2003, the Bryant/Nike deal has been lucrative, earning many millions of dollars for Bryant, and even more for the shoe brand. Kobe Bryant Nike shoes are still big sellers to this day, retailing at over $100 a pair. Some are collectibles worth many thousands of dollars on the sneaker market. However, Bryant comes in on the bottom of the top 10 list of endorsement deals, earning roughly $8 million per year. The top spot still belongs to Michael Jordan, who brings in over $60 million a year just from Nike. Sprite (Coca-Cola) Coca-Cola was not ready to di tch Bryant when the assault charges were first announced, but executives were tight-lipped about their plans. Official word at the time was that they were watching the developments of the case. So, you would think that a settlement, and no guilty verdict, would be good for them and Bryant, right? Well, not so. It seems that Sprite is a drink aimed at the younger kids, and the Coca-Cola execs werent too happy with the image of Bryant and Sprite being synonymous. They let the Sprite deal expire. But thats not the end of the story. In 2008, Coca-Colas Glaceau division signed Kobe Bryant to advertise Vitaminwater. Rohan Oza, SVP of marketing, stated Glaceau operates as an independent unit within Coca-Cola. That was a smart decision made by their management when they acquired us. Keeping the people and culture together that made us so successful is the reason why weve had so many years of triple digit growth. So we came up with the decision to go after Kobe because were fans of his and w e liked the fact that he was already drinking Vitaminwater and that was it. Nutella (Ferrero SpA) Chalk this one up to another case of image being everything. The very idea that Kobe Bryant could have committed a sexual assault was too much for Ferrero SpA, the makers of Nutella. When the news hit, the company decided to sever ties with Bryant once his contract expired in January. The firm said in a press release Considering the recent developments, Kobes image on Nutella labels and promotional material is being phased out Spalding When youre looking at a sports-related product like Spalding, a deal with a star like Bryant is a no-brainer. Bryant had been the face of an exclusive line of Kobe Bryant signature baskettanzfests, and his autographed basketballs were going for close to $200 on Ebay.com at the time. Do a quick search right now for Kobe Bryant and Spalding, and you will see that the basketball giant stuck with the star. A Bryant/Spalding basketball sell for between $25-$35 on sites like Amazon and eBay, and now a signed Spalding ball can fetch upwards of $500 or more. The settlement didnt hurt the sales of the basketballs enough to stop the endorsements. Other Endorsement Deals The mud didnt stick for some brands, and the draw of Bryant as a big name basketball star was too much to ignore. Both Lenovo and Turkish Airlines inked deals with Bryant after the assault case was settled, and Fortune magazine reported that Bryant made upwards of $20 million in endorsements in 2013 alone. That put Kobe at number 3 in the Fortunate 50 list.

What to Wear to Summer Job Interviews

What to Wear to Summer Job InterviewsWhat to Wear to Summer Job InterviewsKeeping cool on the job huntYoure on your way to a job interview. Youre running late youre stuck in traffic and when you finally step out of the car, its so hot you can feel the heat radiating off the pavement. You arrive feeling sweaty and unpolished, and you wind up looking sweaty and unpolished. But it doesnt have to be this way, even on the hottest summer day. You probably already own everything you need its just a matter of equipping yourself with the right tools and walking into your interview with confidence. In transitTake off one article of clothing in transit. It will keep perspiration to a minimum and prevent you from appearing overheated. Youll also feel more comfortable and confident when you walk into the interview. For menRemove your jacket, but make aya you put it back on when you enter the building where youre interviewing. You dont want to risk running into a potential employer nearby looking any thing but completely pulled together. For womenIf youre wearing heels, replace them with a pair of comfortable flats. Tired feet can lead to poor posture. Find a coffee shop or a park nearby where you can sit down and put on your heels before entering the building.Take a breather, cool offWhen the temperatures are high, allow yourself at least 15 minutes cool-down time before every important event. Take a few moments to gather yourself in the lobby bathroom or at a restaurant across the street. Youve already thought about what youre going to say, so devote this time to think about how youre going to look. For menSplash your face with cold water fix your hair check your fingernails for dirt and make sure theres nothing caught in your teeth (smile).Always keep a handkerchief in your back pocket so you can wipe your face if it begins to sweat on the elevator ride up to the interview. For womenIf your hair is pulled back, check for stray pieces if its down, comb it and, if necessary, apply a frizz-control product. Check to make sure your makeup is still intact.Streamline your undergarmentsChoose undergarments that will help you keep cool and not add to the heat. For menDont wear an undershirt. Its an unnecessary layer that will turn up the heat when you need to stay cool. Your jacket will hide sweat stains anyway. For womenLook for breathable underwear with a nylon/spandex blend which helps wick away moisture. This isnt sexy underwear. Its practical underwear.Wear lightweight, unlined fabrics.Choose fabrics that not only keep you cool but keep their shapes and appearances under the heat. For menYou should invest in an unlined wool suit for days when you have to dress up. It makes a jacket feel as light as wearing a second dress shirt. For womenMoisture and heat are the perfect storm for fabrics like cotton, linen and silk. Look for separates with a touch of Lycra. Even if its only 3 percent Lycra, it should keep the wrinkles at bay.Be careful with scentsYou must be conse rvative with perfume and cologne Too much and you risk turning off your interviewer or, worse, offending his allergies. Allergic reactions to certain perfumes and colognes are more common than youd think. For menReplace cologne with after-shave, which has a much milder scent that disappears quickly. Before any big interview, enlist a significant other or friend to do a scent test You shouldnt be able to smell product of any kind - from hair gel to after-shave - from more than an arms length away. If you can, its too strong. For womenIts OK to dab a small amount of perfume on your wrists or neck, but only if its hours earlier. A refresher right before you walk in the door may overpower your interviewers olfactory senses.Tame the maneIn the summer, its not enough to make sure your hair is neat, clean and professional make sure your hair isnt making you melt or highlighting your fevered appearance. For menShave. And get your hair cut several days before an interview. Any less and you ri sk looking boyish and unserious.Unless you work in a laid-back, creative field where personal style is applauded, dont grow out your hair. To your counterparts and superiors, you risk looking disrespectful and rebellious. At the very least, wait until you land the job before you begin growing it out again. For womenKeep your hair off your face, if its long. Keep your hair off your face, if its short. Generally, keep your hair off your face. A low chignon looks smart and sophisticated.Brush up and avoid chewing gumMake sure your breath is fresh. For men and womenBrush your teeth. If you dont have a toothbrush handy, buy a pack of breath strips, which are perfect because they dissolve immediately.Never chew gum you risk forgetting to take it out before the interview.Nina Myers is a New York-based fashion writer.
