Law Firm Success Can Your Firm Afford To Not Develop Your Next Generation Of Rainmakers

Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers Law Firm Success: Can your firm afford to not develop your next generation of rainmakers? I want to tell you about two law firms that were started years ago by lawyers my age. The firms are about the same size. They both are doing very well. Yet, they are vastly different. One firm’s lawyers my age are building the next generation of rainmakers. The other firm’s lawyers my age have done nothing to develop the next generation. Eventually the lawyers my age will retire or leave for other reasons. One firm will survive and thrive, and the other will fold. Maybe each firm is happy with their future. Suppose you want to be like the first firm and want to develop your next generation? Where should you start? Recently I was asked to give a presentation on developing the next generation of rainmakers. I decided I would begin my presentation by describing how  rainmakers are different. I believe most rainmakers have a high degree of emotional intelligence (EI). If you want to learn more about EI for lawyers, here is a good presentation: Emotional Intelligence: A Necessary and Valuable Tool For Lawyers, Legal Departments and Firms. Looking at the components of emotional intelligence, I believe rainmakers have a strong ego drive. In part, they define themselves by the recognition they receive and by the sense of accomplishment they feel when hired by a new or existing client. Most rainmakers are empathetic, meaning they have great ability to understand the world from their client’s perspective. Rainmakers typically exhibit high ego strength/resilience, meaning they are able to bounce back from criticism/rejection or defeat in a trial. Rainmakers are more likely to be sociable, outgoing and extroverted. They are comfortable with people either individually or in groups. Rainmakers typically set high goals for themselves and have a plan to achieve them. These are all examples of high emotional intelligence. But, I think rainmakers exhibit other characteristics: So what do the characteristics of rainmakers tell us about creating the future rainmakers? I think it tells us several things:   I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

We Say We Want To Be More Authentic, But Our Behavior Reveals Something Different - Kathy Caprino

We Say We Want To Be More Authentic, But Our Behavior Reveals Something Different In case you're on Facebook, I'm certain you've had conversations with your companions as I have about how we buckle down (intentionally or subliminally) to make our lives look incredible to others on these open discussions. A companion of mine said I wish my life were as fantastic as it looks on Facebook! I chuckled hard, yet realized it was valid. As of late, I learned of the incredible work of Glennon Doyle Melton, and since the time I did, I've been very constrained by her messages. In her discussion with Oprah on Super Soul Sunday, and her TEDx talk Lessons From the Mental Hospital, and in her smash hit books, she uncovers in a staggering, stunning way how inauthentic (abstaining from telling the crude truth) by far most of individuals on this planet are, not on the grounds that they need to be liars or withholders, but since they're ghastly reluctant to be genuine. All things being equal, you'll understand too that so not many individuals truly delineate for the raw, lowering and hard truth â€"about themselves, their carries on with, their battles. Why? Since we're shown it's undependable to share the realness of our difficulties, and we're terrified to be segregated and judged. What's more, from a cultural insightful, it isn't safe. We are disdained, dismissed and distanced when we do. In any case, a great many Glennon's adherents and perusers, and the astounding clan that Brené Brown and other rousing, truth-uncovering thought pioneers have constructed, approve the possibility that so many millions of individuals today feel disappointed as people â€" they sympathize with alone with their agony and vulnerability â€"and they frantically need that to change. I realize I was hesitant to uncover my actual self, until I overcame up and began sharing my crude truth freely. At the point when I initially started open talking 10 years prior and discussed the 12 covered up emergencies I had confronted, and what such huge numbers of other working ladies experience, the thing participants shared regularly with me about my discussions was this: Kathy, you're so authentic. I felt amazed by this. For the initial barely any months, I'd scratch my head after each discussion, and I truly pondered about it. What did they believe was so true? Four acknowledge started to occur to on me: • Being ruthlessly legit and sharing extremely unflattering (and in any event, terrifying and socially unsatisfactory) things about our lives and encounters is exceptionally abnormal • Doing so permits others to do as such • People are edgy for more realness and genuineness â€" in themselves and in their lives • We so once in a while encounter genuine credibility and crude realness, that when we do, it's terrifying and hard for us As a specialist and mentor, I've experienced this brutal reality: We all state we need validness, yet the vast majority are spooky terrified of it. We run from being genuine, and of being within the sight of genuine, bold, uncensored truth-telling. We simply don't have a clue how to act or what to think. What's more, more awful, our decisions and delicate, frightened inner selves go absolutely insane. We're overwhelmed by the response of I don't resound with this dimness by any stretch of the imagination, and I abhor it! I accept that such a large amount of our dread of hearing crude truth originates from the way that we don't have the foggiest idea how to be empathic. We simply don't have any thought how to step from others' point of view and feel what it feels like to be them. And that is the reason there is so much scorn and anger on the planet. I was a protected child experiencing childhood in upstate New York, and I hadn't seen anything of the world or of genuine difficulties that millions face. So when I was preparing as a specialist in my 40s, the single hardest and most alarming thing for me was to figure out how to just sit with the darkest and most difficult encounters of human presence assault, inbreeding, pedophilia, chronic drug use, misery, suicidality, kid misuse, and so on. I discovered that to have the option to sit in unity with another who was in the most profound agony, and discover love and otherworldly association in my heart with this torment and this individual, was unimaginably testing a direct result of how we're raised, prepared and molded. I saw as well, that when we can find it in our souls to do this â€" interface with that which is so profoundly agonizing that we need to turn away, and associate from the spirit with other people who are enduring profoundly and discover love, sympathy and regard for them â€" at that point all the carries on with included are absolutely changed. I'd prefer to share three things to consider, to assist you with building your capacity to be credible and genuine â€" in your own life and in your associations with others: Figure out how to see and feel your decisions, at that point let them go. At the point when I was seeing a specialist myself concerning why I was so stuck in vocation headings that made me hopeless, he and I discussed what number of decisions I had, each and every day, with respect to what was acceptable or awful, right or wrong, attractive or unwanted, and the rundown continued forever. He requested that I do one straightforward exercise: For the following week, essentially observe every one of my considerations. Make a psychological check mark each time I had a passing judgment on thought, and state to myself: There goes one of those making a decision about considerations. The activity was intended to assist me with getting in nearer contact with what I was thinking, and understand that I am not my musings. I am independent from my musings, and in this manner can change them. The first week, I understood in the wake of taking note of more than one thousand making a decision about contemplations, that I scarcely had one idea that wasn't a judgment. The is sue is that decisions are the demise of harmony. Tip: This week, begin viewing your contemplations. (The normal individual has about 48.6 considerations per minute so it is difficult, yet attempt!). Make a psychological check mark for all of your contemplations that has a judgment implanted in it, and see what acknowledge you start to have about the considerations you constantly think, and what upsets your tranquility, love, quiet and association with others. At that point figure how you should change those contemplations to something all the more cherishing and serene. See what you're so terrified of about yourself. I gave a keynote this week for the Network of Executive Women in southern California, and we discussed our capacity holes â€" the things that cause us to feel embarrassed, powerless, and not as much as that drain the existence vitality out of us. These are our scandalous little tidbits â€" the viewpoints about us that we never need anybody to see. Actually we all have power holes (even individuals you believe are at the head of the world). I know since I talk with probably the most commended people on our planet, and truly, they have power holes too. Our power holes hurt us, since we will in general accept that solitary we have them and on the off chance that anybody knew, they would cast us out of their lives. Tip: Take some an ideal opportunity to diary this week about your capacity gap(s). What makes you so embarrassed about yourself? What story would you say you are enlightening yourself concerning how you're a failure or so not the same as others for encountering it? What do you loathe about yourself as a result of it? At that point ask yourself this: If a companion revealed to you this messy mystery, what might you consider them? Send all the adoration in your heart to yourself and all the light you can marshal legitimately to this force gap. Finally, take one solid, courageous advance to freely share it, at that point address it. Yet, all through this, affection yourself and acknowledge you are not the only one. Understand that what you dismiss in others is simply from dread. I had a discussion with another companion who shared that she simply wouldn't like to allow in obscurity and antagonistic stuff that others share. She doesn't reverberate with it and wouldn't like to concentrate on it. The issue with that sort of reasoning is that when you permit (or power) yourself to reject and avoid obscurity, youre then dismissing each individual who has murkiness within them â€" and people, that is everybody on the planet. Your dismissal of dimness is a type of disavowal: In the event that I don't decide to see it, at that point it isn't there. It IS there, and it's within you too, until you permit yourself to see it, believe it, send love and light to it, and face it. You're basically not seeing it and are dismissing others since you're profoundly apprehensive that you can't deal with it. Tip: Don't isolated yourself from others or from your own dimness since no doubt about it in 10 extraordinary ways to see that we're every one of the a piece of one another, and that to evade what you're apprehensive about, is to avoid yourself too. Remove a stage to get from your little, controlled, protected circle and be with various kinds of individuals who are battling. Discover it in your central core to interface on the most profound level with individuals who don't look or sound or act like you, who don't go in your circles. Grow your points of view and let in a more extensive scope of human experience, and figure out how to love, regard and worth every last bit of it. At exactly that point, can you truly carry on with the existence you long for, and feel the affection, association and acknowledgment you're urgently yearning for. To become familiar with grasping credibility in your life, work with me, look at my week after week webcast, and read my book Breakdown, Breakthrough.

Whats the Difference Between Being Laid Off and Getting Fired

Whats the Difference Between Being Laid Off and Getting Fired Is it true that you were laid off or would you say you were terminated? Think it has no effect? Reconsider. Terminated will in general have a substantially more negative undertone than laid off. Though it's conceivable to be a decent representative and be terminated, you should at present know about the affiliations future bosses may have to the terms you use. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-advertisement 1467144145037-0'); }); Which is Which?Being laid off is generally viewed as the shortcoming of your manager. Its normally either because of spending cuts or corporate procedure/rearrangement, and regularly after mergers. Once in a while even the best representatives are laid off, for example, when cuts are forced no matter how you look at it. It could even be that a whole territorial office was closed.Being terminated is somewhat unique. There is generally a reason and that cause is typically a worker's horrible showing. This will be precarious to disclose to future bosses. There are a lot of reasons you could be terminated that really don't think about you by any means. What's more, numerous states where representatives work freelyâ€" which means they can be terminated whenever, for any reason, or even no reason. The primary explanation you could be terminated illicitly would be for reasons of segregation, yet those circumstances are precarious and require a work lawyer. Why Does it Matter?First of all, on the off chance that you've been laid off, you may be qualified for joblessness benefits. Or then again even severance pay or other leave benefits. On the off chance that you were terminated, you won't. On the off chance that you were terminated, you'll additionally need to begin sharpening the story you'll explain to future bosses regarding why you were terminatedâ€"and doing as such without destroying the organization or your chief. Figure out how to clarify your end that doesn't cast you in too negative a light, yet in addition d oesn't toss any other person under the transport either. What Should You Do?If you are qualified for joblessness, check in with your state joblessness office for subtleties of how to continue. Instruct yourself about the privileges of jobless specialists in your general vicinity. What's more, begin searching for a new position when you can!If you are qualified for severance, ask with your manager concerning their strategies. This isn't legally necessary. You are likewise qualified for any unused excursion days or conceded remuneration as stocks. No matter what, you ought to ask with regards to your organization's COBRA benefits, to proceed with your wellbeing inclusion. Most organizations need to give year and a half after partition. The month to month premiums will be costly, however paying it is better than the alternative.Bottom LineIf you don't know, it's ideal to ask your administrator. On the off chance that you live in a voluntarily work state, they are under no legitimate comm itment to reveal to you why they terminated you. Be that as it may, you are permitted to ask how they will allude to the end whenever utilized as a source of perspective. Better to know whether you were laid off or terminated than to lose a future employment since you made an erroneous supposition.

Bottom Line for Retaining Employees

Main concern for Retaining Employees Main concern for Retaining Employees Need the main concern with regards to representative maintenance? The nature of the oversight a worker gets is basic to representative maintenance. Individuals leave chiefs and directors more regularly than they leave organizations or employments. It isn't sufficient that the administrator is popular or a pleasant individual. Of course, a pleasant, agreeable chief procures you a few focuses with your workers. A draconian, terrible, or controlling director removes focuses from your association. So will underneath showcase advantages and remuneration. Be that as it may, an administrator or director, who is an ace at representative maintenance, realizes that the nature of the oversight is the key factor in worker maintenance. Compelling Managers Create Employee Retention Directors who hold staff start by conveying clear desires to the worker. They share their image of what comprises accomplishment for the representative in both the normal expectations from and the exhibition of their activity. These administrators give visit criticism and cause the worker to feel esteemed. At the point when a worker finishes a trade with a chief who holds staff, the individual feels engaged, empowered, and sure about their capacity to take care of business. Representative protests about chiefs and administrators focus on these zones. Representatives leave supervisors who neglect to: give lucidity about expectations, provide clearness about vocation improvement and winning potential, give standard criticism about performance, hold booked gatherings, andprovide a structure inside which the worker sees he can succeed. Instructions to Help Managers With Employee Retention Pretty much every director can expand her capacity to hold workers by building up her administration aptitudes. Encouraging an administrator about how to esteem individuals can be all the more testing. Especially if the administrator doesnt as of now esteem individuals and their commitments in her psyche and heart, it will be a jump for her to change her qualities. These thoughts will enable your association to create directors who put stock in and act in manners that help representative maintenance. Coordinate fundamental beliefs about individuals and a strategic vision that empower individuals to adjust themselves to the organization heading. Convey the significance of these, and clear assumptions regarding the practices anticipated from directors to achieve these, to each manager.Negotiate an exhibition improvement plan with every supervisor that burdens the normal administrative regions of development,Provide preparing in center administration abilities to each chief. Center administration abilities incorporate how to:integrate execution the executives including objective setting, give and get feedback, recognize and esteem employees, coach representative performance, handle worker grievances and problems, provide an inspiring workplace, andhold vocation improvement conversations with employees.Hold customary gatherings to give the executives advancement training and criticism. You can help supervisors to improve their administration style and abilities. A normal gathering encourages you question occasions as they happen, while recollections of the trades are new in the administrators mind.Schedule and hold learning association occasions, for example, book clubs, item preparing, venture questions, and conversation and arranging gatherings. Give subsidizing to meetings and instructive advancement open doors for directors to proceed learning. As part of a completely coordinated presentation the board framework, give 360-degree input, so supervisors know how their administration style is seen. Imagine a scenario in which a Manager Fails at Employee Retention. In the event that a director fizzles at representative maintenance, the odds are acceptable that the supervisor has been not able or reluctant to build up their capacity to oversee and esteem individuals no matter how you look at it. Administrators who show an example wherein their key representatives leave your association ought not hold their administration job. On the off chance that you have decently and morally gave the administrator the learning openings proposed here, you can, in great still, small voice, expel the person from their administrative job. The general understanding of downgrade most associations find is that most supervisors consider this such lost notoriety and face that they deliberately leave the association. In the event that they decide to remain, be that as it may, they should focus on getting compelling, contributing representatives. In the event that the director can't make this jump, you should release the administrator before their antagonism impacts the remainder of your working environment. Given the administration advancement openings recorded here, most chiefs will have the option to become supervisors who hold their best workers. Your interest in your chiefs can fuel your associations progressing achievement. All things considered, it is the nature of the individuals you utilize and hold that is the core of your business achievement.

Millennials In The Workplace - They Might Be On To Something

Twenty to thirty year olds In The Workplace - They Might Be On To Something As per the Pew Research Center, there are 54 million twenty to thirty year olds in the American work environment, which implies there are 54 million grown-ups between the ages of 18-34 and this age makes up in any event 33% of the workforce. This rush of laborers who are internet based life canny and advanced locals brings something other than a spic and span dependence and viewpoint in regards to innovation in the working environment, nonetheless. There are sure social and normal practices that the millennial workforce brings to the working environment that may move how function is done and the eventual fate of work, out and out. First off, its frequently summed up thatmillennials need ordinary input, work-life balance, work environment adaptability and a various, monetarily stable workplace and they are eager to leave an occupation where they feel exhausted and underestimated or where their psychological wellness is in danger. Thus, the individuals who will in general be administrators of millennialstypically Baby Boomers, Gen Y and Gen Xershave taken to marking the companion as entitled, unmotivated, propelled by moment satisfaction and traitorous comparative with past ages. It's anything but difficult to generalization social average fixated youngsters, and chiefs may not realize how to connect best with this educated more youthful age who is more used to two-way correspondence as opposed to top-down mandates. In any case, the administrators may have no real option except to adjust since the work power keeps on getting more youthful consistently and loaded up with computerized locals who can perceive how others see their occupations and how others feel about their work.Adding to the weight for directors and managers to adjust is the straightforwardness and recently discovered data that helps change the attractor variables of specific employments. To effectively select twenty to thirty year olds, bosses n eed to stress more than life-time business (something recent college grads don't see themselves needing or having in any case) and on a consistent payeck than the millennial ages want for adaptable work and a sound work-life parity may end up being the finish of the 9-to-5 work routine and the initial move towards strategic scheduling for all. Different patterns appear to help the millennial development. All things considered, in the course of the most recent year, two examinations have been discharged that demonstrate that the 40-hour work week is off base. These reports likewise show that working extended periods can really be terrible for your wellbeing. Morever, there are conceivably unintended, adverse reactions that excessively sway a few people when a culture of exhaust wins. The initial, an investigation from the Australian National University, for instance, found that ladies are lopsidedly influenced by long work hours. Taking into account that customary jobs in the home despite everything imply that ladies do the brunt of the housework, this is obvious: ladies will work extended periods of time in the workplace and afterward get back home to a house that necessities cleaning and a family that requirements care. (This wonder is otherwise called the subsequent move.) Also, an examination by scientists at Ohio State University established that all representatives in the workforceregardless of genderwho work over 60 hours seven days are adversely influenced by this sort of timetable. The vast majority - men, ladies, twenty to thirty year olds or Gen Xers - have needs and pastimes outside of work so this finding is nothing unexpected. In addition, there are different investigations indicating that there might be consistent losses to extended periods of time as far as genuine gainful representative yield. In what capacity would society be able to address the compulsive worker mindset and keep us from working ourselves to death? The more established age may have acknowledged this work environment culture and these accepted practices yet the more youthful laborer is making every one of us question these things. Perhaps the millennial workforce has the appropriate response: its chance to reconsider the idea of work-life equalization and representative prosperity. More noteworthy accentuation and esteeming of care-taking may likewise arrive at a weight point as the person born after WW2 age arrives at the age where their kids begin expecting to experience caretaking responsibilites for their folks just as their youngsters (in some cases simultaneously). Grappling with the Second Shift As a general public, we have to perceive that as long as ladies are relied upon to do most of housework and childcare, working mothers will all day occupations will be working at any rate 40-hour weeks and afterward getting back home to do an additional 20 hours of work around the house. By joining more strategic scheduling into workers schedulesfor the two ladies and menemployers can urge men to take on a greater amount of the obligations at home and still get in their 40 hours out of each week. Need to take off at 3 pm to get the kiddos from school? No issue! Make up the two hours after the children have headed to sleep. One Size Does Not Fit All Obviously, not all occupations are assembled a similar way, which implies that not every person can exploit adaptable hours. For example, most hourly specialists presumably work in shifts and dont get the advantages of strategic scheduling so one approach to help them is to give quality childcare at lower cost, through government appropriations or voucher programs. What does this resemble practically speaking? Will changes like these make such a powerful move in customary sex jobs? Likely not. In any case, as I sit in my home office, composing this article, my little girl is snoozing in the following room and my better half is ground floor, gathering the dishes from this nighttimes supper, andcan you think it?baking cinnamon rolls. I notice this not to boast (*okay, so I love my significant other, and Im gloating a little*), but since Im a working mother and an administrator of a little group of researchers with an over 40-hour, strategic scheduling work week. Taking care of our girl and gathering the dishes may seem like no enormous thing, however when my significant other here and there expect these little undertakings, it permits me an opportunity to compose articles like these, get an additional heap of clothing done, or unwind with some Elder Scrolls Online. In view of my spouses ability to share the housework and kid care, I routinely work a 60-hour week, and I have more opportunity to think about my family and my marriage. - Dr. Amanda G. All staff likewise left their?way to keep me educated consistently and set aside some effort to address every one of my inquiries. All that they did was clarified obviously and with extraordinary compassion. They all appeared very?happy at work and were extremely overall quite benevolent around one another too. This is significant, in light of the fact that some examination shows that cheerful emergency clinics have better patient results. 2: The entire process?was exceptionally effective The surgery?went just impeccably and I was done in a couple of hours, similarly as booked. Manchester Made Me Making the most of University University of Manchester Careers Blog

Manchester Made Me Making the most of University My Graduation For many, a degree is a route to further education or employment, but for most (I think) it is an easy way of delaying being a ‘grown-up’ and conveniently, it can be lots of fun. This is certainly true for me. At 18, I knew I should probably start thinking about the future, and a degree seemed like a step in the right direction. However, I couldn’t quite work out how I would put my degree to use when I graduated. Starting my degree didn’t help either. I studied Philosophy and Religious Studies, and although I didn’t know what I wanted to be, I knew being a philosopher wasn’t really an option. In my second year, things changed. I discovered Fuse FM, Manchester’s student radio station. It was a brilliant way of making new friends and trying something new. I also quickly realised that the skills I was learning would benefit me when looking for a job. Teamwork, confidence and time management are all things that get employers excited about, and they were becoming second nature to me. In my final year, I was elected to be the Station Manager of Fuse FM. This allowed me to put a bit more of a focus on employability in the society. I was making students aware that their new skills would help them when looking for work, even if getting a job in radio wasn’t for them. However, for me, getting a job in radio was what I wanted to do. I made use of my contacts and got work experience at stations in Manchester and worked hard on boosting my CV. Sadly, I’m still waiting for the call from Radio 1, but my skills definitely benefitted me. My extra-curricular activities meant I was organising events, marketing them, speaking publically at them, managing my time; because I was meant to be studying for my degree at the same time, and showed that I was really passionate about the work I was doing. These employable skills got me my current job. I’m a marketing assistant within the Careers Service and it’s great. I’m doing very similar things to when I was running the radio station, only now I’m getting paid. I had practical skills and real life experience, something that was vital for me getting a job in an area I didn’t study in. When competing with other candidates, I needed to make myself stand out. I stood out because of the experience I gathered while at university. For me, studying was only part of my time at university. The rest of my time was spent being involved in things poles apart from my degree programme. They were useful, but they were also fun to do. I think a common misconception is that careers related activities are dull or irrelevant. Working in the Careers Service, I know that the important, stand-out qualities, are never dull or irrelevant. Careers and ‘the future’ can seem daunting, but to prepare, it is best to start early. You don’t necessarily need to know what you want to do when you graduate, but you should remember that you are probably going to need a job. I was able to prepare for this, and I recommend you do too. Join a society, get involved with a volunteering project and have a great time! Skills gained from activities like these will certainly help you when you do graduate and you may in fact discover a career path that you hadn’t even considered. I would recommend attempting various blends until you discover one that suits you. For example, have a go at changing the shading to a dim blue or yellow. This is one way that you can get the impact that you want.</p><p></p><p>Also take a gander at the edges on your Word archive. They ought to be set lower than the page. This assists with maintaining a strategic distance from void area that could cause undesirable to notice your resume. On the off chance that you think you need assistance with edges go to Microsoft Word and do some free help.</p><p></p><p>Your subsequent stage is to arrange your resume. This is finished by right tapping on the resume and going to organize. Here you can change the text styles, change text dimension, and change the line dispersing. Most organizations utilize one top of the page and the following segment beneath, utilizing visual cues. You can likewise place in any honors or awards that you may have gotten.</p><p></p><p>The last thing that you can do is attempt some new Word hues. A portion of different styles that you might not have any desire to utilize could fit well into this style and can truly include that additional flare that you need .</p>

How to REALLY Relaunch your Job Search (David Drescher)

How to REALLY Relaunch your Job Search (David Drescher) David Drescher and I have been corresponding for a long time over email.  He sent me an email this week outlining how he has gotten awesome success in his job search.  His email is below, with my comments in bold italics. I went to potential employer  vendors websites. Brilliant. A great way to find new target companies that you might not have heard of before, but help you understand the industry better. Once there, I extracted 200 target companies. From employers websites,  manta.com,  linkedin.com, and  http://www.bbb.org/, I was able to identify the company owners. Those are great research sources.  They dont have the entire picture, but surfing around can help you get more and better information as you prepare for that phone call. I procrastinate when I am home and have a task I do not want to do. Dont we all? So, I went to the department of labor in Morristown, NJ. There, I anguished over writing a phone script since I undervalue my skills and my worth to employers. If there is a list of the top 5 things that keep job seekers from success, this has to be on that list.  We are capable but we undervalue what we can do! Somehow, I got enough of a script down on paper.  I forced myself to call about 50 of the 200 owners in the span of one week.  I will get to another 50 next week. Key phrase: Forced Myself.  Folks, job search is not a walk in the park.  Its not easy.  We dont all love the tasks we need to do.  Sometimes we just HAVE TO DO IT.  Force yourself!  You might find its not so bad and with more practice you might get better From calling, I got most everyones email addresses and cell phone numbers and followed up. Two major successes: 1 getting more info, 2 FOLLOWING UP! In the next week, I have 5 interviews scheduled. Not bad, ~1 interview per 10 phone calls. NONE of the positions were advertised and some may be created for me. WOW!  WOW!  I guess forcing yourself can give good results, huh? No one likes cold calling unless you are a sales maven which I am not.  Do not expect you will like it. Just get out of bed and do it awful if need be.  Shaky hands, poor script, and quivering voice is OK too.  You WILL get better each day. Your fears will subside. You will eventually come across relaxed and natural.  The interviews will come. This is awesome, David, thank you for that last paragraph.  JUST DO IT!  Even if it is not perfect Stay away from job boards, career gurus, useless networking meetings (you are building your own) and wasting time perfecting  your resume. Valid thoughts let me address each one: Job Boards: have their place and value they are great for research, not so great for applying online (although people do it, and it works). Career Gurus:  This is a hard one.  If I had a career coach or resume writer, I would have gotten a job.  But there are charlatans out there and you have to be able to find the real ones, not the get-rich-quick scammers. Networking Meetings: you said useless so of course thats something to stay away from.  Aside from that, figure out which meetings to go to and do it right.  Dont just show up, be a warm body, and feel like youve networked theres more to it than that. Wasting Time Perfecting Resume: Yep. Its easy to hide from the hard stuff (phone calls) by tweaking a resume, a job search spreadsheet (use JibberJobber instead), etc.  Stop tweaking if it doesnt lead you to interviews. It is OK to tweak it for a particular job but do not spend more than 20 minutes doing so. It is also a good idea to join a few professional organizations that do what you want to do. You can do serious networking there. Good thoughts Take all those rules you have in your head about getting an interview and trash them. You are selling your ability to make your employer money. Period. Call and find out who is buying. Anything beyond that is a waste of time. There is other good stuff, but this goes to the core of what you need to communicate David, Im glad this is working for you now, go make more calls! Mickey Mouse Degrees - Unfair Or Just About Right

Mickey Mouse Degrees - Unfair Or Just About Right Describing some degrees as Mickey Mouse obviously illustrates that discrimination still exists in our education system.  The same also applies to university rankings. Isn’t education supposed to be a gift? Why does this snobbery even exist? Especially in forums, I see a lot of hasty comments regarding what people study and this practice is definitely a let-down. Acknowledging that university fees have increased, it should be a privilege to study what you are passionate about. Mickey Mouse Degrees Unfair Or Just About Right? What Do You Mean by Mickey Mouse Degrees? This terminology relates to those courses that don’t hold a good reputation in some peopless minds, such as Law, Medicine, Economics, Maths, etc. There might be others I haven’t left them out deliberately; it is because I’m not keen on spending my entire time listing the unattractive degrees out there. The point is that prejudice in terms of education shouldn’t really exist. Does that Mean my Degree Is Worthless? No! Not at all! I truly believe that going to university is a personal matter. You study what you take pride in, and no one should be forced to take a subject just because it holds a high reputation. In order to find yourself in employment, the minimum requirement is a 2.1. As a result, it is important to study what you love and, therefore, succeed in it. Most importantly, employers want to see what skills you have attained. Work experience has become increasingly important and, dare I say, experience has become more important than gaining a 2.1 or a First class degree. However, entering the rat race of acquiring numerous internships is challenging.  Therefore, every experience you gain is a valuable one. As Experience Is Highly Important, Mickey Mouse or Not, Is There Any Point in Attending University? As I have already highlighted, university is a personal decision. I understand that the majority of us are encouraged to go to university as it is the norm and we are too afraid to get out of our comfort zone and go for an apprenticeship or equivalent. However, it could be argued that graduating with a degree gives an individual a sense of stability. That degree is theirs and no one can take it away from them. Additionally, it can be used to their advantage. As a result, if your degree isn’t seen as a highly reputable degree, it is still an achievement. It is an achievement that you’ve put all your hard work and effort into and should be proud of. What About Employment Rates? From what I have read, degrees that are classed as Mickey Mouse do have high employment rates. As this is a controversial topic, I have read articles which mention that, although Media Studies doesn’t have much of a reputation, the employment rates within this field are high. Graduates are still finding themselves in employment, which is the reason why most of us are in education anyway.   There’s no guarantee in anything these days. It is all about who you know in the industry you wish to pursue a career in. Will Mickey Mouse Degrees Get Eliminated? There has been a lot of debate around scrapping or stopping to provide funds for these type of degrees. Needless to say, Science degrees need money for students to carry out their research, so I can understand why there is a lot of prejudice around them.   Every degree has a different level of difficulty. Some may argue that more money should be put into those degrees that illustrate a higher level of difficulty. But thats not always the case. The demand, which determines the supply, will always be there for different types of degrees, irrespective of peoples perceptions of their value. So I dont see any areas of study going extinct just yet. There’s still a lot of snobbery out these when it comes to studying whatever subject to a degree level. No matter what degree youre studying, youd always hear people saying, Oh, what on earth can you do with that degree?. It’s a great shame that, acknowledging that we do have access to education something others are less fortunate in, there’s still a lot of bickering and prejudice going on. But it will probably always exist. 10

I Applied for a Job and Havent Heard Back (Updated in 2019)

I Applied for a Job and Havent Heard Back (Updated in 2019) I applied for a job and haven’t heard back. Now what?Two-Column Cover LetterFirst, when you applied for the position, did you send a two-column cover letter that shows you meet at least 50% of the job’s selection criteria? If you didn’t, consider writing one now. However, if you don’t meet at least 50% of the job’s selection criteria, don’t put any more effort into going after this job. Instead, invest your job search time in pursuing opportunities that better match your knowledge, skills, and abilities.BTW, dont send this letter. Two-column cover letters are a nifty idea, but hardly anyone executes them well. They are, however, excellent tools for job seekers to use in analyzing whether or not their background matches a particular job description well enough to interest a potential employer. Were You Compliant?Next, if you meet at least half the selection criteria, be sure you applied as specified in the directions.Did You Satisfy the Applicant Tracking System? Then, if you applied through an applicant tracking system (ATS), check your keywords. Optimally, your resume (not your cover letter) should contain each keyword the ATS will search for to produce a list of applicants for human eyes.Again, if you can’t use 50% of the keywords you identify, don’t put any more effort into pursuing the job.Are you done with that one to two-hour process? OK, that was quite a bit of work to correspond with a freaking computer. If it makes you feel any better, 151 of 152 people who try to get a job through an ATS also say, I applied for a job and havent heard back. Thus, its a good idea to ask yourself why you are corresponding with a computer instead of a person.Find the Right PersonNow, rather than churning out letters to computers, invest your time in getting to know people who can support your candidacy inside your target companies.Stop writing to computers unless someone inside the company has your resume and has agreed to provide it to the hiring manager. Then fill out all of the computer stuff and jump through the hiring process hoops to make HR happy. If you match the jobs qualifications, figure out a way to find a human being who works in your department of interest. If you can’t do that yourself, it’s OK to ask others for help. You can plan on making your job hunt a team sport. Keep asking others until you have it figured out.Once you find a person who works in your department of interest, make contact with them. Briefly explain your qualifications for the job â€" the 30-second version, not the 30-minute version.Ask them for their advice on how to pursue the position. People love to give career advice. Look at me. I do it for free right here.Hopefully, the company has an employee referral program. If they do, this person might pounce on the opportunity to refer you because they stand to gain something too. It’s likely a win/win proposition that you are offering, so you can do it with a strong spirit and high confidence.Wait Some MoreIf you have applied through personal contact and ten working days have elapsed, then look at these tips for more ideas on what to do next with your time and your contact person. You can also consider carefully repeating all of the above with a second person.BTW, while youre waiting to hear back, keep looking for new opportunities. Thoughts on Being am-BITCH-ous

Thoughts on Being am-BITCH-ous If you’re looking for a shot of girl power, pick up the book “am-BITCH-ous” by Debra Condren, Ph. D. The cover of the book states the definition of am-BITCH-ous as: “a woman who: 1. Makes more money 2. Has more power 3. Gets the recognition she deserves 4. Has the determination to go after her dreams and can do it with integrity.” I read this book almost two years ago and its lessons have stayed top of mind ever since. I think many women view the word ambition as a dirty one. Which, ironically, is the title of Debra’s newest book “Ambition is Not a Dirty Word.” Some women may try to be overly polite in the workplace due to their fear of seeming too “ambitious.” This often means less pay, fewer promotions, and letting others take credit for your ideas. Although we’ve seen several women in our generation crack the “glass ceiling,” many others still live in fear of carrying out their deepest ambitions. I’ve never quite understood where this fear comes from! This may be a controversial topic for some, but I’m going to go ahead and keep writing I’d love to hear your feedback on this too, so leave some comments! I believe that women are the only ones holding themselves back from living out their wildest dreams and career aspirations. There’s no doubt that society may make it a bit harder for women, but honestly we have two choices: we can either let it bother us, or keep on truckin’. Going to college at Miami of Ohio exposed me to some very interesting female perspectives on ambition that often left me feeling confused and frustrated. Here are the types of false beliefs that I have heard girls express: • “Guys aren’t attracted to really smart and successful women because THEY want to be the smart and successful ones.” • “I’ll be perceived as less feminine if I show too much of my ambition.” • “I’m waiting for Prince Charming to come, then I won’t have to worry about being ambitious.” (Um, get real!) • “Well, I don’t know EVERYTHING about my field, therefore I know nothing. So I will just keep hiding in the background and play it safe.” • “Oh no, I’m not ambitious! I’m hard working.” (Again, avoiding the word ambitious) Have you heard women say these types of things? Have you ever had these types of thoughts? If so, where did your fear of ambition come from? What made Ambition a dirty word?

Improving Your Service To Develop A Loyal Customer Base

Improving Your Service To Develop A Loyal Customer Base While you might think the most consumers value lower prices above anything else, superior customer service remains an important reason why people choose to shop with a particular retailer. Businesses that demonstrate excellent customer service stand a better chance of receiving positive reviews online and through social media, which helps to develop a loyal customer base that can make up a significant part of your profits. Could your business improve its customer service? Take a look at some of the improvements you can make to ensure that customers keep coming back for more. Establish customer service Twitter accounts The number of people choosing to complain online compared to those who complain via phone is increasing. As a result, many businesses are establishing separate Twitter accounts to deal with customer complaints and keep their main feeds focused on promotion purposes. Understanding more about how people use Facebook and Twitter to complain to companies can help you work out the best strategy for handling this new age of complaints. Offer better services than your rivals Online businesses can suffer from a lot of competition, which means your business needs to have an edge to succeed. Offering consumers something extra such as increased security or free shipping charges can have a significant impact and whether a consumer chooses you or a rival. TicketOffices is a great case study of a business thats gone the extra mile to improve the services it offers its customers. TicketOffices boosted their ticket sales security with a 100% guarantee on all resold tickets for events, giving them an edge over their rivals. Ask for feedback By asking your customers for feedback, you can determine real ways to improve your services. An email following a purchase can ask the customer questions about their experience of your business and help you improve areas that are causing concern. Offering your customers an incentive for providing you with feedback, such as a prize draw or discount coupon can help increase your response rate. Make it faster Its no secret that people want a fast experience when browsing online. When a website is slow to load or has too many processes, people will give up and try elsewhere. Improve the speed of your website and cut the number of steps in the checkout process to help you increase your sales by turning leads into conversions. Offer deals and promotions they’ll love When businesses offer deals and promotions. it can help to ensure good relationships with both new and existing customers. Instead of offering deals that dont provide much in the way of savings, become known for offering amazing promotions that will put your rivals in the dust. You might have to offer some significant discounts, but your increased sales will more than make-up for it. Loyal customers are great for helping to spread the word about and making return purchases. When customers are happy, they’ll come back for more, but dissatisfied customers can cause a lot of damage through negative reviews and public complaints when your aim should be to reduce repeat support contact. Treat your customers right by improving your service and let the rewards speak for themselves.
